Struggling to connect with aging loved ones? Learn simple, effective ways to improve communication with elderly parents and strengthen your relationship.

How to Communicate Better with Aging Loved Ones Across Generations

Communication has changed dramatically over the years. From handwritten letters and long phone calls to quick texts and emojis, each generation has developed its own preferred way of staying connected.

While these changes have made communication faster and more convenient, they can also create challenges—especially when communicating with aging loved ones.

Understanding these generational differences is key to building stronger relationships, avoiding misunderstandings, and ensuring your loved ones feel heard, respected, and supported.

           How Communication Styles Have Evolved

Each generation has been shaped by the technology and social norms of their time:

            Older adults

often grew up with face-to-face conversations, phone calls, and written letters. Communication was more personal, with tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language playing a major role.

            Middle generations

adapted to a mix of communication styles, including phone calls, email, and texting.

            Younger generations

tend to prefer quick, digital communication such as texting, emojis, and voice notes, often multitasking while they communicate.

None of these styles are “better” than the others—but differences can sometimes lead to confusion or misinterpretation.

           Why Communication Gaps Matter

When communication styles don’t align, it can lead to:

            Misunderstandings or unnecessary worry

            Feelings of disconnection

            Frustration on both sides

For older adults especially, communication is about more than just exchanging information—it’s about connection, reassurance, and feeling valued.

Tips for Communicating with Elderly Loved Ones

Improving communication doesn’t require major changes—just intentional adjustments.

           1. Prioritize Face-to-Face Interaction

Whenever possible, spend time in person. Make eye contact, be present, and minimize distractions like phones.

           2. Speak Clearly and Naturally

Enunciate your words and maintain a normal tone. Avoid speaking too slowly, which can come across as patronizing.

           3. Practice Active Listening

Give your full attention. Ask meaningful questions like:

            “What did you do today?”

“How did that make you feel?”

Then listen carefully and respond thoughtfully.

           4. Share Your Life in Ways They Can Enjoy

Show photos, tell stories, and include them in your day-to-day experiences. This helps strengthen your connection.

           5. Don’t Rely Solely on Texting

While texting is convenient, it may not provide enough clarity or reassurance. Important information is best shared through a call, in person, or written down.

           6. Write Down Important Details

If your loved one needs to remember something—like an appointment or visit—leave a written note in a visible place.

           7. Be Patient and Compassionate

Communication may take more time, but it’s worth it. Patience and kindness go a long way in building trust and comfort.

           Building Stronger Connections That Last

Communicating with elderly family members isn’t always the same as communicating with peers—but it’s often far more meaningful.

By making small adjustments to how you communicate, you can create deeper connections, reduce misunderstandings, and build memories that last a lifetime.

Support heart health and fight winter blues with simple senior exercises, sunlight tips, and creative activities that boost emotional and mental well-being.

“Knock, knock, Mom, anybody home? It’s me, Ryan, your favorite son! Oh, wait a minute –I’m your only son!”

Ryan stepped into his mom’s family room to find her in her favorite chair, but something was off. Sure, Betty smiled at him, but the chuckle his favorite-son line always brought was missing.

“What’s up, Mom?” Ryan asked as he leaned down to kiss her cheek.

“Oh, nothing’s up. I’m fine. Really!”

“Who are you trying to convince, Mom? Me or you? Because if it’s me, it’s not working. Let’s talk about it. What’s going on?”

“Nothing is going on –and maybe that’s my problem. We’ve had a lot of dark, dreary days in January, and February hasn’t brought any changes yet.”

Ryan and his mom continued talking and came up with an action plan to combat the winter blues.

February is ‘heart’ month, so they decided to focus on the ‘heart’ of the matter.

            I. Exercise

It helps improve/maintain a healthy heart and overall fitness, including emotional-mental health. Ryan and Betty focused on a few simple core-building and balance options.

            Core building #1

Sit upright in a sturdy chair, with your feet flat on the floor.

Hold a lightweight object, like a small ball or a water bottle, with both hands.

Keeping your back straight, twist your torso to the right, hold for a count of three.

Return to facing forward and then twist to the left.

Repeat for 10 twists on each side.

            Stand with feet shoulder-width apart.

Place your right hand on your hip and reach your left arm overhead.

Gently bend to your right side, holding for a few seconds.

Complete 5-8 bends on each side.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart (with your left or right side beside a counter or the back of a chair).

While holding onto the counter or chair, extend your leg forward and return to your starting position.

Repeat this motion, extending your leg to the right side, then the left side, returning to the starting position each time.

Finally, extend your leg back and return to the starting position.

Start with your feet at hip-width.

While holding onto the counter, lift one foot slightly off the ground. Keep your body tall and avoid leaning onto your planted foot.

Hold your foot up for 10 to 15 seconds.

Repeat 5 times on each leg.

Note: You can advance these exercises by transitioning from one-hand support to no-hand support. Always stand near a sturdy counter in case you need to regain your balance quickly.

Ryan and Betty discovered multiple options to help in fighting the blues. For example –

            Get Plenty of Sunlight:

If you must remain indoors, open your blinds/curtains. Sit by a window that lets in the sun.

            Stay active:

Do the above exercises. Talk to family and friends. Call HomeAide’s transportation services to meet a friend at the local coffee shop, etc.

            Get regular sleep:

Try to go to bed at the same time every night and arise at the same time every morning.

            Get your Vitamin D:

Less sunlight means less Vit D, which, in addition to many other health factors, helps with mood and mental health. Avocados, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, kiwi, oranges, and bananas are all great sources of Vitamin D.

           III. Encourage Mental Health

Studies show that creativity, especially creativity that gives to others, can give your mental health a boost.

It’s heart month, but sending little cards or notes to family and friends always brings joy to both of you – all year long. It doesn’t have to stop with sharing valentines.

Keep a basket of craft supplies on hand. Make a bracelet with pipe cleaners and beads, create a bookmark, decorate a vase with beads or stickers, and pick up a flower bundle in the florist section of your grocery store.

The Power of Humor in Caregiving

Laughter truly is the best medicine. Discover how caregivers can use humor to uplift seniors’ moods, ease pain, and improve emotional well-being.

“Always laugh when you can, it is cheap medicine.” English poet Lord Byron.

“Can I help you find something?” the librarian asked Katy.

“Yes, please. I’m looking for a book of clean jokes that will appeal to seniors in their eighties, give or take a few years,” responded Katy.

“Sure. Follow me – joke books are over here in aisle nine. You’ve got me curious. Why are you looking for joke books that appeal to that crowd? Are you picking one out for a grandparent?”

“Well, my grandpa would love to read them, but that’s not why. I’m an in-home caregiver. Many of my clients struggle with health and other issues. They’re often bored, lonely, and/or face daily struggles. Bringing humor into their life and giving them something to laugh about really makes a difference: For example, a good laugh can –

Give a boost to their mood, lowering their tension, worries, and feelings of being isolated.

When they can share that humor with their caregiver, or family and friends who come to visit, it helps them feel connected and build stronger relationships.

Humor also makes an impact on their mental health. It stimulates creative thinking and helps strengthen their memory recall.

It helps improve their physical health and boosts their immune system. According to the Mayo Clinic, ‘laughter enhances your intake of oxygen and stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles. Positive thoughts can release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more serious illnesses.’

Finally, laughter potentially eases pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers. Laughter and feelings of joy release endorphins in the brain. According to researchers, the release of endorphins can also control physical pain.”

“Wow. I guess there is truth in the adage “Laughter is the best medicine. Well, here you are – if you have trouble finding the perfect book, I’ll be glad to help you.”

So, now you're wondering, “How can caregivers - and family members - bring humor into their clients' or family members’ daily routine? Consider these tips.

Treat them with respect and kindness. Smile. Encourage them to laugh at the little bumps in the road as they adjust to being cared for, rather than caring for others. Gentle, appropriate teasing or laughing at your own mishaps can set the tone for humor. Start small and pay attention to what brings a smile to their face or generates a chuckle.

Take time to listen. Encourage them to share humorous stories from the past. Often, one story can lead to another, not only bringing laughter and joy to the teller but also a sense of being loved and valued.

Spend time with them reading comics, playing word games, or even watching a rerun from their younger days. Promote humor through light-hearted activities. Be sensitive and attuned to them. Everyone responds to different types of humor. What one senior thinks is funny might offend another one. While one person might respond to a comedy show, another might prefer listening to music from their childhood or reading a humorous article.

Instead of making these grand goals, I can resolve to grow as a person. When I shared it with Suz, my caregiver, we put together an ‘I resolve’ plan for seniors. She’s going to pass it on to all her patients.”

Proper rest is essential for well-being. Are you getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night? Have you considered a 20 – 25-minute power nap? While a long nap can be detrimental, a power nap after lunch can give you a boost of energy, helping you be more active, which in turn can improve your sleep.

Are you participating in programs at your local fitness center? Do you have a specific habit you want to overcome? Sure, you might not have any significant actions, like smoking, to overcome, but there are often smaller habits that may seem inconsequential to others, yet they’re something you have always wanted to stop or start doing. Choose one habit to change and break it down into a series of small goals that continue to lead you toward success.

Keeping your mind active strengthens your brain connections. Reading, doing word puzzles, playing cards, and other activities can strengthen your brain connections, improve your memory and ability to focus, and enhance your quality of life. Best of all, stimulating your brain can lower the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's.

While a certain amount of consistency in your days can help reduce anxiety and bring calmness into your life, there is truth in the adage “variety is the spice of life.” Consider a few small ways you can mix things up for fun. Perhaps you have a glass of orange juice with your breakfast every day. Why not try a glass of apple or cranberry juice instead? Maybe you always wear this shirt with that pair of slacks. Why not try a different mix?

Speak up. Communicate your thoughts on a topic being discussed. Share a touching or funny story from your past. Ask for help when you need it. If you feel anxious or discouraged, talk to someone. When one person expresses themself, it encourages others to do the same. Furthermore, active conversation can have a positive effect on your mental and physical health and your quality of life.

Why Transportation Services are More than A Ride

Discover how senior transportation services support independence, social connection, and better health while easing the load on family caregivers.

Abby sat on her porch, enjoying the neighborhood activity. She loved staying in her home. Her family had helped her create a safe, uncluttered environment. She could cook for herself, and several of the eating places in town delivered. Her granddaughter did light cleaning and laundry once a week to earn money for a newer vehicle. Life was sweet, except . . . she was always at home. If Abby called family for a ride to the grocery store, they would ask for a list and pick it up, not realizing that she wanted to do her own shopping. If she wanted to meet her friends for lunch, Abby was, once again, dependent on a ride. Of course, her family ensured that one of them was available for Dr. appointments, but Abby knew they had to juggle their schedules. In the end, she only called when absolutely necessary.

“Good afternoon, Miss Abby,” shouted Cassidy, one of her neighbors, pausing her bike ride to chat. “How are you doing?”

“Oh, I’m doing fine,” responded Abby. “I’m enjoying the beautiful weather. Have you been busy? I haven’t seen you for a while.”

“Actually, I took on a part-time job now that our youngest is in kindergarten.” Cassidy parked her bike and walked up to Miss Abby’s porch. “I’ve been driving for the Home Care services north of town. I take people who no longer drive wherever they need to go – to doctor appointments, shopping, parties, and more. I really enjoy it.”

“Oh my! Would I be able to get rides?” asked Abby. “My family takes me now, but I try not to ask too often.”

“Of course you can, and I think you should. Using our transportation services is more than a ride! There are many advantages, such as –

It opens the door to visiting friends, attending parties, going to church, having lunch out, or participating in community events. The need for social interaction is essential for everyone, including seniors. It doesn’t go away just because you no longer drive.

It helps people stay on top of medical needs, from scheduled visits to unexpected illness requiring a sudden appointment. Perhaps you need medicine from the pharmacy. Suppose your doctor orders physical therapy or another type of ongoing care. Transportation services can provide a way—no need for your family to rearrange their schedules to get you there.

It helps to make traveling easier. Our vehicles are designed to be easily accessible for getting in and out. If you use a wheelchair, we offer vehicles with wheelchair ramps. Our drivers take the time to understand each passenger’s needs. They assist their passengers in and out of their vehicles, adjust their seats, and ensure their comfort as well as their safety.

It helps people stay active and restores a sense of independence for those who are relying on the sporadic availability of friends and family. I have one client who goes to the Y twice a week for chair yoga. Sometimes she tops it off with a stop at the grocery store on her way home.

It allows those who no longer drive to still be independent and maintain control of their schedule. For example, you could schedule a hair appointment for Tuesday morning, followed by lunch with friends. Then you could sign up for the book club at the Library on Thursday. And speaking of book club, using transportation services allows more freedom to participate in local community events.

For seniors who depend on family caregivers, using a transportation service gives their family some relief and more energy for the rest of their responsibilities.

Finally, instead of adjusting their schedules to accommodate your ride needs, your family can spend a few minutes each week helping you plan and schedule our services.

So, there you have it – seven great reasons to use our transportation services. Seven ways that all add up to having more time for you and your family to enjoy one another. Instead of spending your time together riding to appointments and other places, you can invite them over for a relaxing visit.”

“Oh my, that sounds wonderful. My daughter is stopping by after work today. Can you tell her about it, too?”

“Sure, I’d be glad to do that. I’ll bring over the pamphlet and other info with me.”

Cassidy took off on her bike, and Abby sat on her porch, dreaming of lunch with her friends, grocery shopping, the book club . . .

Decluttering Now – Downsizing Later

Help your loved ones enjoy their home longer by decluttering now. Create space, reduce stress, and make future downsizing easier with family support.

“I’m not ready to downsize. Your dad and I lived in this home for 45 years before he died, and I’ve been here for another five. I always said I’m not going to become a stubborn, old woman, but I’m not ready to move yet,” stated Barbara.

“We aren’t asking you to move, Mom,” responded Lisa. Her husband, Jason, nodded in agreement.

“You aren’t? Then what’s the big ‘talk’ about?”

“We want to help you downsize your stuff – not your living space,” said Jason.

“If we help you declutter now, your home will be safer, you’ll have less to take care of, and you can enjoy it more, said Lisa. “Jen, Michelle, and Chris and Amy will help. The grandkids will help too. We’ll create a timeline to make it less overwhelming and tackle it one room at a time.”

Barbara looked around her dining room and gazed into the living room. “I do have a lot of stuff I never use, and it can get in my way, but it’s hard to separate memories from practicality. It’s easier to go to lunch with my friends and save it for another day.”

Once Barbara realized her family wanted to help her, rather than ‘take over,’ they put together a plan. Initially, they met on the first Saturday of each month to declutter a room. After the second month, Barbara was ready to pick up the pace, and they met every other Saturday.

Drawer by drawer, shelf by shelf, they sorted items into four categories:

Keep: I still use this item – even if it’s seasonal.

Donate: I haven’t used this item for months, but someone else would appreciate it. Sell: Some items were worth selling, and Barbara set the money received aside. “How I use this is my secret,” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

Toss: I don’t know why this is still sitting here – out to the trash!

If an item was an heirloom, or even a more practical item with lots of memories attached, that Barbara was ready to pass on, it was set aside for kids and grandkids to choose from. Once they were finished ‘shopping”, the remaining items joined the sell or donate piles.

As Barbara sorted her knick-knacks, she also considered her wall hangings. Less on the wall meant less to dust now and less to get rid of later when it was time to downsize. A couple of the granddaughters gathered all the photo boxes together and offered to scan them and create printed photo books. Multiple photo boxes became a set of books on Barbara’s living room shelf.

Six months later, they were finished. They hired a local cleaning service to do a deep cleaning.

When the cleaning crew left, Barbara walked through each room, made herself a cup of tea, and sat down in her favorite chair. Her mind was at rest, and her once anxious heart and mind filled with peace. The clutter was gone.

Everything had a place yet was easy to find when she needed it.

Tripping hazards were a thing of the past.

Her home would be much easier to clean (or cost less if she chose to hire someone)

For the first time in a long time, the idea of having her family in for supper or hosting a luncheon for her friends sounded like fun instead of overwhelming. Barbara knew she would enjoy her home until she needed to downsize to a senior condo. And when the time came, it would be a much easier transition. She picked up her phone to call the granddaughters and invite them over to look at her new photobooks.

Hydration: A Critical Need for Seniors

Hydration is essential for seniors’ health. Learn the benefits of staying hydrated, signs of dehydration, and easy tips for tracking daily water intake.

“Good morning, Jake,” greeted his caregiver, Brandon. “Did you watch the Seawolves last night?”

“You know I did!” responded Jake with a chuckle. “Fell asleep in my chair. My grandson was watching it with me. He had to wake me up to go to bed, if that makes any sense!”

Brandon raised a blind, then stepped into the kitchen to get a fresh glass of water for Jake. When he returned with the water, Jake drank a few swallows and set it on the end table.

“What’s the big deal about water? I’m not even thirsty.”

“Staying hydrated is more important than people realize,” Brandon told him. “It does a lot more than quench your thirst . . .

Drinking enough water each day helps –

Keep your digestive system healthy. It can reduce heartburn, bloating, and gas while maintaining regular bowel movements.

Improve your blood circulation, which means your heart doesn’t have to work as hard, and your brain receives more oxygen, increasing your mental clarity and energy.

Flush toxins from your body, helping to prevent illness.

Lubricate your joints. Approximately 70-80% of your cartilage is composed of water, so drinking enough helps reduce muscle cramps and joint pain.

Dilute mineral concentration in your urinary tract and flush bacteria from your bladder, which helps prevent kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

Regulate your blood pressure and body temperature, which helps your heart stay healthier.

Maintain skin elasticity, helping to prevent dryness and wrinkles.”

“My goodness! Drinking water is more important than I realized, but how can I know if I’m drinking enough?” asked Jake.

“There are lots of ways to record your water intake. For example –

If you have a 16-oz reusable water bottle, put four rubber bands around the upper half of your bottle. Every time you refill it with water, slide one rubber band down. If you get all the rubber bands down by the end of the day, you know you drank 64 oz. of water.

Keep a notepad beside your chair. Every time you finish a glass of water, put a check mark on your pad. If you are using an 8-oz glass, aim for eight check marks; if it’s a 12-oz glass, aim for 5–6 check marks.

One of my clients has two small jars, one empty and one with marbles. Every time he drinks a glass, he moves one marble to the empty jar. If he has moved all the marbles over by the end of the day, he knows he drank enough.

I’ll be happy to help you come up with a plan.”

“I think I like the check marks the best,” responded Jake. “I always did like numbers! But my memory isn’t as sharp these days. How will I know if I’m not getting enough water?

Here, drink a glass of water while we go over a few of the signs of being dehydrated,” said Brandon with a wink and a smile. “Waiting until you feel thirsty isn’t enough. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. For example –

             Is your mouth dry?

Do you feel like your tongue is sticking to the roof of your mouth?

Are you more tired than usual?

            Do you feel dizzy?

Do you have trouble concentrating or feel confused?

Do you feel like you are easily irritated?

Do you feel like your heart is racing?

Have you noticed your urine being darker in color?

“Hi, Mona,” Paula smiled as she opened the door. “Thanks for coming here for coffee instead of meeting uptown. Jake is confused lately, and I don’t feel comfortable leaving him home alone.”

“Oh, I don’t mind. I always said your coffee is the best!”

Mona and Paula, friends since childhood, were soon sitting at the table, coffee cups in hand, and a plate of pastry snacks between them.

           “Where is Jake?” asked Mona.

“He’s in the den watching old reruns.” I took him a cinnamon roll and coffee before you came.”

            “Are you doing ok, Paula?

“Most of the time, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. The kids came in and helped me make the house safe. We removed throw rugs, simplified our layout, and relocated knives to a safe place. We also put our medicines in a locked medicine chest, among other changes. However, I know I still have a lot to learn. Which is why I need your advice, since you work with Alzheimer's and dementia patients.”

“It sounds like you’re off to a great start, but here are some more strategies to help.”

Create a living space that’s calm, comforting, and quiet

            .

Go back through your rooms and get rid of clutter. Eliminate a lot of knick-knacks, but keep the ones that you’ve had for a long time and are very familiar to Jake. Set framed photos here and there of family and close friends.

            Many Alzheimer’s patients become wanderers.

Installing an alert bell on your doors that lets you know when someone is leaving, can prevent Jake from going outside, wandering away, and getting lost. A GPS tracker pendant can be another safeguard in case he does manage to get out without you being aware.

“But those are safety guards, and I think you are asking me about more general care and communication.”

Paula nodded. “Some days, it seems so easy to chat, but then . . .”

Communicating can be hard, but these tips will help

When you’re talking, use short sentences and simple vocabulary.

Center your conversations on the present – the past is confusing.

When they bring up the past, they may be confused or even talk about something that never happened. Don’t try to correct them; listen and respond to their feelings with compassion, patience, and gentleness.

Remember, you can recognize and acknowledge their emotions and anxieties, whether or not you understand and agree with them.

Keeping a routine is another helpful tool

Try to keep mealtime, bedtime, and wake-up time consistent.

Do the same with anything that is a daily routine, from watching old reruns to chair yoga.

Speaking of chair yoga, incorporating exercise (simple, not complicated or overtaxing) or walking can help with moods and encourage sound sleep.

            Serving healthy meal choices

Find a healthy balance regarding meals

Protein, nuts, berries, and a variety of vegetables will help Jake feel better and do better.

Olive oil and foods rich in omegas can help his brain.

On the other hand, include some of his favorites from the past. Comfort foods and occasional desserts may be one of his pleasures.

“All of these are important tools for those who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, but I saved the most important tip for last.”

           Don’t travel this road alone!

Talk to your family and friends

            .

Ask them to come and visit. Discuss activities they enjoy that Jake can do with them. Some of the time, you may wish to stay and enjoy the visit with them, but use some of these visits as an opportunity to get out – whether you’re getting errands done, meeting another friend for lunch, or simply finding some quiet alone time.

            Find a support group

Getting Exercise Despite Limited Mobility

Limited mobility doesn't mean no movement! Discover safe, effective exercises seniors can do with a caregiver to boost mood, strength, and overall well-being.

"Good morning, Maggie," said Neveah, with her cheerful smile. Maggie's caregiver was a bright spot in her day every time she came.

"You will be pleasantly surprised," responded Neveah as she sat down beside Maggie.

"When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, which trigger a happier mood, relieve stress, and help us feel better about ourselves and life."

"Well, when you put it that way," Maggie paused. "But I still don't know how I'm going to do it."

Maggie’s concerns are common. Exercising when you have limited liability can feel overwhelming, and it's easy to think it doesn't matter anymore once you've passed a milestone age. But, as Neveah proceeded to show Maggie, there are ways to get exercise – even if you're dependent on a cane or wheelchair-bound.

           Arm circles:

Hold your arms straight out at your sides (or as straight as you can) and move them in small circles. Gradually increase the size of your circle. If that's too much, try holding your arms out in front of you, making circles. If you must keep your elbows bent, that's ok. The idea is to make the movements consistently.

           Arm lifts:

Sit in your chair, with your arms bent at the elbow and resting in your lap. Keeping your arm against your body, raise your left hand to your shoulder and then lower it back down. Now do it with your right hand. Repeat back and forth until you have lifted each arm 8 – 10 times. You can build up over time.

Chair yoga, designed for individuals with limited mobility, is another effective way to incorporate exercise into your routine. Here are a couple of chair yoga movements to try with your caregiver's assistance.

           Seated twist:

Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your back tall. Place your right hand on the outside of your left knee. Take a deep breath, stretching your spine. As you exhale, gently twist your upper body to the left. If possible, turn your head to the left as you twist your body to the left. Hold your position while counting to 10, then return to your original position. Repeat but twist to the right this time.

           Knee lifts:

Sit with your feet flat on the ground and place your hands on your thighs. Inhale and lift your left knee, then exhale as you place your foot back on the floor. Repeat with your right knee. How many times you do it and how high you lift your knees will vary according to your strength and mobility. However, both the height and the number of lifts will increase over time.

           Walking

is another excellent exercise to do with your caregiver. Start with short walks. You can gradually increase. Even if you are wheelchair-bound, your caregiver can push you, and the fresh air will rejuvenate you.

           Water aerobics

can be another plus because it's a low-impact activity that's easy on your joints, while building your strength and improving your balance. Ask your caregiver if this is available in your community.

           Games

can be a fun way to get some exercise. For example, place a bucket, dishpan, or box about six feet in front of your chair. Try to toss a bean bag into the bucket. Of course, this takes someone to help you get the supplies and then play the game with you, but that's another benefit -

“Yeah,” responded Jason. “I was reading an article about seniors and social interactions. Social interactions are vital for seniors, providing them with a sense of belonging, helping prevent depression and cognitive loss, and increasing overall health, including building a stronger immune system.”

Other studies revealed that social interaction among seniors improves brain function. According to Dr. Shah, from the Mayo Clinic, interacting with others is exercise for the brain — it’s one of the best ways to improve cognitive flexibility. It’s likely more beneficial than doing crossword puzzles or other brain games.”

“So, we all agree that social interaction is essential for Mom’s emotional, mental, and physical health,” commented Lisa. “The key is, how are we going to make this happen? We all work full-time and have family responsibilities. Even though we are all stopping in for a visit once a week, that’s not getting Mom out of the house.”

“What about companion home care?” asked Jason. “It’s not home health nurses who come in for medical reasons – it’s caregivers who are companions. You can have a companion visit as little as once a week or as often as daily. They provide light assistance with tasks such as bathing, laundry, and cooking, while also offering companionship and encouragement. For example, a caregiver would help mom prepare her lunch and then sit down and enjoy it with her. In addition to assisting with light tasks, caregivers enrich the lives of their clients on many levels, including social interaction, emotional support, and companionship. They help with transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, social gatherings, and more, like enjoying the great outdoors by taking a walk or having a picnic at the park. Another benefit is transportation. Home care services include taking clients to appointments, grocery shopping, classes, and other outings. We wouldn’t have to take time off work to get her to her hair appointments! They also offer respite services – no more talk about canceling that cruise with our families!

“What’s going on, Sis?” asked Sarah. “I could tell that you weren’t yourself when we chatted this morning, and now I find you crying. Did something happen to one of the kids?”

“Yeah, it’s one of my kids – my oldest “kid!” responded Alexia. “Dave’s dad is going to drive me silly. I want him to live with us. He’s been a super father-in-law and grandpa. Plus, I want to do this for Dave. But some days, I want to run away from it all! He used to help Dave’s mom with the laundry – which I always thought was sweet. Today, he decided to ‘help’ me with the laundry while I was sweeping the bedrooms. He switched the load from the washer to the dryer and turned it on – ruined my new sweater!”

“Oh, Alexia, I admire what you’re doing here, but you must take care of yourself too. Now, take a nap, a walk, or a drive to Mannie’s for your favorite Italian Ice. I’m going to stay here and watch game shows with your father-in-law. While John is watching, I’ll look into tips for dealing with caregiver stress. We’ll talk when you get back.”

First, Alexia had to recognize that stress was damaging her emotional and physical health. She acknowledged that she wasn’t sleeping well and often found herself depressed, anxious, and irritable. She was too busy for activities that used to bring enjoyment.

Just talking to someone who cared helped Alexia. She recognized that their home was a safe and loving environment for Dave’s dad. They had a financial plan, but now they needed a stress-reducing guide. A pot of coffee and a couple of hours later, she and Sarah had created a plan.

            Avoid:

Choose one of your most common struggles in caring for someone in your home. Write it down and then determine how you could avoid that hassle.

            Alter:

Write down one thing that causes you stress. Determine what action you could take to alter that situation in the future.

            Accept:

Yes, this is the situation you are in right now. Choosing to accept will help you use your energy to focus on actions you can take to make it go smoother rather than the frustrations that can arise.

            Adapt:

Whether it’s learning new skills, being intentional about appreciating the small things, adjusting your schedule, etc., long-term care requires adapting.

The key to all four A’s is being willing to ask for help, seeking counsel, connecting with organizations designed to help caregivers, and talking to caregivers. Give yourself credit for all the ways you have already chosen to avoid, alter, accept & adapt.

8 Tips to Reduce Stress for Caregivers

            Get regular exercise:

Choose an activity you enjoy, like joining a televised exercise group, swimming, walking, dancing, or joining the Y. Consistent exercise not only reduces stress, it also builds your energy, clears your mind, and makes a significant impact on your overall health.

Choose healthy meals and sleep habits:

It refuels your body and builds your energy to face your tasks with a more positive attitude.

            Take time for meditation:

It not only reduces stress levels, but it can also reduce your blood pressure and improve your sleep. But that’s not all; it can increase self-awareness, which can help you have more empathy and compassion with your loved one.

            Connect:

It’s easy to become so busy caregiving that you don’t take time for relationships. Make a weekly phone date with a trusted friend or mentor. Connect with online support groups for caregivers. Meet a friend for lunch. Set regular date nights with your significant other. Connect with a home caregiving service – they help with your loved one and give you time to get away.

Involve other family members in caregiving:

Whether it’s helping with your loved one or taking responsibility for tasks that used to be yours, there are many ways for family and friends to pull together. Sometimes, they are just unaware of the need for help. Other times, they want to help but don’t know how. Don’t be afraid to ask.

            Just say no:

Learn to say no to activities and responsibilities others place before you. Sometimes, you may want to help or join a group but learn to stop and ask yourself. “Will this build me up so I’m a better caregiver, or will it pull me down?”

Do something you enjoy every day:

Even if it’s just 20 minutes each morning or afternoon, do something that is pure fun – whether it’s reading, a hobby, playing with your pet, watching your favorite sitcom, etc. – joy defeats stress.

            Laugh:

Yes, that’s right! There’s a reason for the proverb, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Laughter takes the edge off those stressful moments and improves your overall mental and emotional health.

Ben and Claire sat on their porch swing, watching the paramedics load their neighbor, Anna, into the ambulance. Her son followed in his car as the ambulance drove away.

"I hope she's ok," murmured Claire.

"Yes," said Ben, "and we need to do all we can to avoid a fall ourselves. I recently read that falls are the #1 cause of injury and even death in older adults."

Ben was right. Each year, one out of four seniors will fall, and 20% of falls will result in a serious injury, including broken bones and head injuries.

Of course, one can't change the fall risk factor of being over 60, but there are other factors to be aware of and take steps against.

If you have already experienced a fall, and even if not, do stretch and balance exercises. Sign up for a water aerobics class, take walks, do chair yoga, etc. Building your strength will counteract weakness and poor balance, both fall risk factors.

If you have a chronic condition, such as Parkinson's or arthritis, talk to your primary care doctor about ways to prevent falls.

Discuss any medications you are on. Side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and impaired balance can increase your fall risk.

Maintain annual visits with your eye doctor. Impaired vision is often a fall risk factor.

Wear well-fitted, nonskid shoes with good support. Avoid thick soles or heels.

If you use a cane, walker, or other assistive devices, use them correctly.

Keep a well-charged phone near you. Keep close family members and emergency numbers on speed dial or listed as favorites. Post a list of important phone numbers in various places around your home.

If you have a pet, be aware of where it's at. Pets can be tripping culprits.

Creating a safe environment in your home is also imperative. There are multiple ways to make your home safer.

Have someone walk through your home with you and adjust, secure, or even remove items that could easily trip you, including throw rugs, loose cords, or unnecessary clutter.

Keep open spaces for walking throughout your home. Coffee tables or other items can end up being something to trip over.

Install railings, grab bars, raised toilet seats, and other items that can provide support and assistance.

Install nonslip mats in your bath/shower or use a bath seat.

Ensure you have sufficient lighting in every room. Use nightlights to help if you get up to go to the bathroom or get a drink during the night. Change your light switches to ones that glow in the dark, making them easy to see.

Keep a flashlight by your bed and in other pertinent places in case there is a power outage.

Ensure items you use often, especially in the kitchen, are easy to reach.

Use chairs that are the right height to get in and out of easily.

Connect with people and resources that can help. Consider it an investment in your personal safety and independence.

Hire a neighbor or service to keep your outdoor walkways and drive salted and cleared of snow in winter.

Ask a professional to help you make your home a safe space. It might include some small remodeling projects.

Purchase a medical alert device. In the event you do have a fall, being able to get help immediately is crucial.

The Big Decision – 5 Benefits of Having a Caregiver

Discover 5 key benefits of hiring a caregiver—from maintaining independence to personalized care and peace of mind—for your loved one and your family.

Ashley rushed out the door, threw her briefcase in the back seat, and raced to her mom's. She had a meeting at 10:00, prep at 9:30, and now her mom needed help with her bath. Somehow, Ashley would have to skip the hot tea and chat after her bath without hurting Mom's feelings. If only her sisters didn't live states away.

Later that afternoon, Ashley pushed away the guilt she felt and made a call to a local Home Care Agency. It was her wisest decision of the month!

Ashley's mom could stay in the comfort of her home – with her cat Sassy. She could enjoy the familiarity of the home she had lived in for the past 40 years, sleep in her bed, and treasure the memories each room spoke to her. But that was only the beginning. Ashley's mom would also –

Most seniors want to stay home as long as possible and hang on to their independence. Utilizing a Home Care Agency provides the help your loved one needs while allowing them to perform the tasks and self-care they can do. Since having a caregiver is flexible, it can adapt to each client and what is best for them. It allows your loved one to control their schedule according to needs and preferences rather than following a care facility's specific mealtimes, bedtimes, etc.

Save on the cost of a skilled-care nursing home until needed.

Nursing Home fees are costly, and rightly so – it's 24/7 care for your loved one. However, if your loved one doesn't need nursing care, paying a Home Care Agency to come in on specific days and hours to help them with various care and tasks and drive them to appointments. etc., is a much more manageable cost for them. Furthermore, a Home Care Agency offers flexibility. Care needs can change from day to day and week to week. While your loved one may have a somewhat fixed schedule, a caregiver can adjust according to needs and times.

Caregivers are typically assigned to specific individuals, which allows your loved ones to get to know them. Their caregivers become special companions. Companionship is a life essential. According to the

Your loved one will receive personalized care according to their specific needs. Even though there are needs common to many seniors, everyone is different. Perhaps your loved one can fix their meals, but they need someone to ensure they take their medicine correctly. Your loved one may be relatively mobile and not require a walker but needs help bathing. Each client's needs determine their assistance.

Give yourself some peace of mind. Putting some of your loved one's care into the hands of a Home Care Agency leaves more time for the hot tea and chats or other personal traditions you and your loved one enjoy. Focus on work at work without worrying about your loved one's safety and happiness.

The friend or family member you’re caring for may resist having a beneficial medical procedure, taking prescribed medications or hiring in-home help. If you are convinced that the disputed care is in your loved one’s best interest, certain approaches can help them see your point of view. It might help, for example, to include their physician in the discussion; or if the issue has become a power struggle between you and your loved one, it might be best to step aside completely.

           Quick Tips:

Plan a good time for discussion.

You’ll want to bring the subject up when you are both feeling good and relaxed. Anything that can help everyone involved remain calm will be helpful.

            Focus on the positives.

Point out that the care will make your job as a caregiver easier (if that’s the case). If they are resistant to hiring in-home help, you might stress that the assistance will allow them to live at home safely and longer. Include them in the interview process if possible.

            Don’t force it.

If your loved one is healthy enough to make their own decisions, they have the right to refuse care. If they’re not cognitively able to do so and you have power of attorney, however, you are legally responsible for deciding what’s in their best interest

What do you expect to find out from these tests?

Do I have to do anything special to prepare for any of the tests?

Do these tests have any side effects

Will I need more tests later?

Understanding your doctor’s responses is essential to good communication. Here are a few more tips:

If you don’t understand your doctor’s responses, ask questions until you do understand.

Take notes, or get a friend or family member to take notes for you. Or, bring a tape recorder to assist in your recollection of the discussion.

Ask your doctor to write down his or her instructions for you.

Ask your doctor for printed material about your condition.

If you still have trouble understanding your doctor’s answers, ask where you can go for more information.

Other members of your health care team, such as nurses and pharmacists, can be good sources of information. Talk to them, too.

Here are some common feedback mistakes:

Speaking out only when things are wrong.

Providing generic praise without specifics or an honest underpinning.

Waiting until performance or behavior is substantially below expectations before acting on it.

            Giving negative feedback in public.

Criticizing performance without giving suggestions for improvement.

Clearly, giving and receiving constructive feedback is a skill that must be honed.

Developing proficiency in this area is essential to building good relationships with, and motivating peak performance. To help get you

started, here are four tips for providing feedback the right way:

           1. Be proactive.

Nip issues in the bud and avoid messy interpersonal tangles that result from neglected communication. If you

meet with employees regularly to give feedback, it conveys, “Your success is important to me, so I want to be accessible to

           you.”

           2. Be specific.

Although it’s not easy to provide negative feedback, it’s important to be as clear as possible by giving specific examples that illustrate your point. Instead of saying, “You don’t show up early enough for me” say, “When you don’t arrive with enough time left for me to update you, I worry that we’ve not communicated clearly about what is needed. Can you please arrive five minutes earlier so we can talk without me being so rushed? “
